Rawawah is a deep depression located in the mountainous area known as Al-Hiliyyah or Mount Rawawah, south of Madinah between Al-Far' and Madinah. It was historically a stop for pilgrims’ caravans during the Islamic eras.
Rawawah is especially significant due to its collection of early Arabic inscriptions found in western Saudi Arabia, dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AH (7th and 8th centuries CE). These inscriptions are written in the unpointed Madani script and serve as an important resource for studying the early development of Arabic writing. They also highlight the cultural growth and prosperity of the region during that time.
