Masjid Al-Musalla is a historic mosque in Madinah, located southwest of the Prophet’s Mosque. It was first built during the time of Caliph Al-Walid ibn Abdul-Malik. When Omar ibn Abdul-Aziz was governor of Madinah (706-712 CE), he ordered the repair of all mosques and places where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed.
This mosque is famous because the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed the Eid and rain prayers here. Abdullah ibn Zaid said:
"The Prophet (peace be upon him) went out to the Musalla to ask for rain, faced the Qibla, turned his cloak, and prayed two units of prayer."
The mosque is also called Masjid Al-Ghamama. It was renovated in 1953 during the rule of King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Since then, it has been maintained and repaired regularly.
