Jamaraat Bridge – A Key Site for the Hajj Stoning Ritual

The Jamaraat Bridge is in the Mina area. It was built and improved during the Saudi era to help pilgrims perform the stoning of the Jamarat more easily. It also helps manage the large number of pilgrims who visit each year.

This place is where Shaitan (Satan) tried to stop Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was going to sacrifice his son Ismail. Because of this, it became the site for the stoning ritual, one of the main parts of Hajj.

Pilgrims throw seven small stones at each of the three Jamarat:

  • The small Jamarah

  • The middle Jamarah

  • The large Jamarah (Jamarat al-Aqabah)

Abdullah bin Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) said he saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) do this:
He threw seven pebbles at the lower Jamarah, saying "Allahu Akbar" after each one, then faced the Qiblah and made du’a (supplication). He did the same at the middle Jamarah, and finally threw at the large Jamarah, but did not stop there. He said:
"This is how I saw the Prophet (PBUH) do it."
