How to Perform Umrah

How to perform Umrah: - Step-by-Step Guide: 

1)   it is mustahab to pare the nails, trim hair, remove the hair from the armpit and below the navel, and have coition with one’s spouse if there is no sharayee prohibition as haidh (menses) or nifaas (bleeding after childbirth).

2)   It is sunnah for a bath before wearing Ehraam even though a woman may be in menses nifaas. If time and circumstances do not allow a bath, then wadhu (ablution |) will suffice.

3)   Wear the Ehraam at meequat with two cotton sheets or toweling for males and norma clothes with the head’s hair covered by a scarf for females.

4)   Perform two rakaats sunnah, not in prohibited time, soorah kafiroon in the first rakaat and soorah Ikhalsa in the second rakaat respectively after soorah fateha.

The male must wear headgear while performing these two rakaats.

5)   After salam, males in the same position, have to uncover the head and make niyyah through heart by uttering the following.

(ALLAHHUMMA INNI UREEDUL UMRATA FA-YASSIR LEE WA-TAQUABBALHAA MINNI.)

 Translation: - o’ Allah, I intend to perform umrah, make it easy for me, and accept it from me.

6)   After Niyyah, say talbiah as follows and Darood in the last.

(LABBAIK, ALLAHUMA LABBAIL,

LABBAIK LA SHAREEKA LAKA LABBAIK,

INNAL HAMDA WAN NE’ MATA LAKA WAL MULK, LA SHAREEKA LAKA.)

 Translation: - Here I am at your service Allah, I am present, I am present, you have no partner. I am present all praise and graciousness as well as the entire universe is yours. You have no partner.

 NB: -

a)   For Ehram niyyah is a condition and Talbiah a rukn. To Say Talbiah once is a condition and to repeat it thrice sunnah.

b)   Males have to say Talbiah loudly whereas females with lower voices.

c)   During Ehraam Talbiah is repeated every now and then while standing sitting walking, getting up early morning after every namaz, etc till the time reached near Hajar-e Aswad (Black stone).

d)   Females in menses and nifaas must perform all the above items except two rakaat wajibs.

e)   Say whatever do’aa at this mount. It accepted.

f)     Now you have become a Mohrim. Hence all Mohrim’s restrictions will be applicable to you till the conclusion of Umrah.

g)   Pilgrims for Hyderabad (India) Proceeding through Jeddah airport have to wear Ehraam with Niyyah and Talbiah at Hyderabad only where as pilgrims from Hyderabad proceeding through Madina Munawwarah Airport, have to put on Ehraam at Meequat between Madina Munawwarah and Makkah by name Zul-Halaifa or Beira Ali.

 Proceed to Makkah Mukarramah: At first sight at the holy city, Makkah Mukarramah says the following do’aa without lifting your hands.

(ALLAHUMMAJ-AL-LI BIHA QUARARAN WAR-ZUQNI FEEHA RIZQUAN HALALAN.)

Translation: - “o’ Allah! Bless me with peace from it and provide me a halal livelihood.”

Entering Masjid-e-Haraam: - three are many entrances to Masjid-e-Haraam including four main huge entrances by name Alfatah, Al-Umrah, Al-Malik Aziz, and Al-Malik Fahad.

NB: - Females to enter Masjid-e-Haeaam, if menses or nifaas is haram (forbidden). They must enter Masjid-e-Haram and perform Tawaaf only after getting cleaned and bath.

Enter from any door with the right foot first, having utmost humbleness and respect, saying following do’aa.

(ALLAHUMMAFTAH IEE ABWABA RAHMATIKA)

Translation: o Allah! open for me the doors of your mercies.

At first sight at Kabatullah, Say Allah-o-Akber Thrice then say

(LA-ILAHA ILLAHO WAHDAHOO LA SHAREEKA LAHOO LAHUL MULK WA LAHUL HAMDO WA HOWA ALA KULLI SHAIYEN QUADEER)

Translation:  There is no Deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, the universe belongs solely to him, and all praise it solely for him and he has infinite power over everything.

NB: -while first sight at kabatullah, make do’aas which are most certainly accepted by Allah.

Tawaaf: Circumambulation: The WORLD Tawaaf actually means to make frequent circular rounds. In Umrah Tawaaf means making seven rounds around kaabah.

In Umrah, Tawaaf is fardh (obligatory) without Which Umrah Is Null and void. Hence some are to be known.

1)   Idh-tibaa:- in evety Tawaaf which is followed by sa’ee an action called Idh-tibaa is sunnah for male only, in which one has to take one portion of Ehram’s upper cloth sheet below the right armpit and put it up left shoulder in such a way that both the portions of Ehraam’s upper sheet come upon the left shoulder and right-hand arm and shoulder remaining fully uncovered. With one end of one cloth sheet dropping at the back and the other end kept on the chest.

2)   Istilam :- it means.

1)   place both palms on the Hajar-e-Aswad and kiss the Hajar between two palms.

2)   Otherwise be contented by placing the palms only on the Hajir-e-Aswad and kissing your palms.

3)   Or touch Hajar-e-Aswad with a stick and kiss that stick.

4)   Or stand exactly opposite the Hajar-e-Aswad and stretch both your hand with palms facing the Hajar and imagine that you are placing your palms on the Hajar and then kissing your palms.

NB: - it is haram (sin) to push, harass or hurt other persons also struggling for Istilam.

3)Raml: - Raml is also sunnah for males only in which one has to walk hastily, taking short steps and chest out with moving shoulders simultaneously like a wrestler entering the ring to fight. Raml is to be made only during the first three rounds of that Tawaaf which is followed by sa’ee.

 How to perform Umrah Tawaaf: -

1)   while entering Mataaf, do idh-tibaa and reach kaabah’s corner where Hajar-e-Aswad is fixed. Say Talbiah once and discontinue it afterward. Now stand facing Kaabah in such a manner that the entire Hajar-e-Aswad remains to your right and left shoulder towards rukn-e-yamaani.

2)   Niyyah of Tawaaf:- in this postion say tawaad’s niyyah which is condition for tawaf and without which tawaf is deemed to be null and void.

The Niyyah is (ALLAHUMMA INNI UREEDO TAWAAF BAITIKAL-HARAAM FA-YASSRHO LEE WA, TAQABBALHO MINI)

 Translation: O Allah, I intend to perform tawaf around year Sacred house; hence make it easy for me and accept it from me.

 3)   After saying Niyyah move to your right taking side steps with the face and chest towards kaabah till you are in position squarely opposite to Hajar-e-Aswad. Now raise both hands up to the ears with your plams facing towards Hajar-e-Aswad, and say the following.

 (BISMILLAHI WAL-HAMDU-LILLAHI WALLAHU AKBAR WAS-SALATU-WAS-SALAMU ALA RASOOLILLAHI).

Translation: in the name of Allah, and all praise is for Allah and Allah is great and salat and salam be on Rasoolullah.

NB: - Do not say this and nor raise your hand until and unless you stand exactly opposite to Hajar-e-Aswad.

Now drop your hands and so first istilam as described earlier.

 4)   After Istlam, commence Tawaaf moving from Hajr-e-Aswad towards the door of kaabah (ant-clock wise) around the Kaaba and Hateem thus completing one round by reaching Hajar-e-Aswad.

5)   While passing opposite Bab-e-Kaabah (door or kaabah) recite the

 following Do’aa:

(LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAHU WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU LAHUL-MULKU WA LAHU HAMDU WA HOWA ALAA KULLI SHAYIN QUADEER)

Translation: There is no deity except Allah; He is alone: He has no partner; the universe belongs solely to Him; and all praise is solely for Him; and he has infinite power over everything.

 6)   While passing Rukn-e-Iraqui,recite the following Do’aa:

(ALLAHUMMA INNI A’OOZU-BIKA MINASH – SHAKKI WASH SHIRKI WAL-SUFRI WASH-SHIQUAQUI WAN-NIFAQUI WA SOO-IL AKHLAQUI WA SOO-IL-MUNQUALABI FIL-MAALI WAL-AHLI WAL-AWLADI WAL-ASHABI.

Translation: O Allah! I take refuge with you from suspicion idolatry, infidelity, disparity, hypocrisy, bad manner and observing on return, bad change in goods, family, children, and companion.

 7)   While passing Rukn-e-shami recite the following Do’aa:

(ALLAHUMMAJ-ALHU HAJJAN MABROORAN, WA SA’YAM MASHKOORAM, WA ZANBAM MAGHFOORAN, WA TIJARTAN LAN TABOOR, YA A’ ALAMU MA FIS-SUDOOR, AKHRIJNI MINAZ-ZULUMATI ILAN-NOOR YA AZIZO YA GHAFOOR)

Translation: - O’ Allah! make Haj accepted, effort grateful, sin pardoned and make it a trade unperishable, O’ knower of thoughts in the hearts, take me out of dark to the light O’ Aziz and O’ Gaffar.

 8)   While passing Rukn-Yamani recite the following Do’aa:

(ALLAHUMMA INNI AS -ALUKAL-ASWA WA-AASIATA FID-DEENI WAD-DUNYA WAL-AAKHIRAH).

Translation: O Allah I beg you for pardon and safety in deen, in this world and hereafter.

9)   While passing mustahabb (Rukn-e-Yamani to Rukn-Aswad) recite the following do’aa: as seventy thousand angels are deputed there to say “Aameen” round the clock.

(ALLAHUMMA RABBANA AATINA FID-DUNYA HASNATAN WA FIL -AAKHIRATI HASANATAN WA QUINA AZAABAN -NAAR WA ADKHNILNAL-JANNATA MA’AL ABRAR YA AZIZU YA GHAFFAR, YA RABBAL – AALAMEEN)

Translation: - O’ Allah our Master! grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the hereafter, and save us from the punishment of fire, and admit us in Heaven along with holy persons O’ Aziz O’ Ghaffar, O’ the Master of Universe.

10)      Then on reaching exactly opposite to Hajar-e-Aswad, on start the second round by saying: BISMILLAH WAL-HAMDU-LILLAHI WALLAHU AKBAR” and after making 2nd istilaam. Similarly make a total of seven rounds with istilam at the end of every round: but do not raise both hands up to the ears in the second and subsequent rounds. Do not forget to make the last and eighth istilaam at the end of the last round which is sunnah-mo-akkada. During rounds of Tawaaf, you make do’aa as you like and in any language.

 11)      Two Rakath Wajibut-Tawaaf: After Tawaaf i.e. seven rounds), perform two Rakaaths Wajib better behind Maquam-e- Ibrahim AND OTHERWISE AT ANY PLACE IN THE Masjid-e-Haraam and then only the Tawaaf is complete. These two types of Tawaaf (But not in prohibited timings) face towards kaabah and not the Hateem better by reciting surah Kafiroon and surah better by reciting surah Kafiroon and surah Ikhlaas Respectively after surah fatiha in both Rakaaths.

 Multazam: - If possible after two Rakaaths wajibut Tawaaf followed by the sa’ee go to Multazam (Portion of kaabah’s wall between Hajat-e- Aswad and door of kaabah) with arms stretched above the head, and cling to the kaabah’s wall and make Taubah Istighfaar and Do’aa humbly and sincerely, which is accepted by Allah.

Do’aa may be made in your own words and in any language.

Note: After a Tawaaf without sa’aa go to Multazam before performing two Rakaaths of Wajibut-Tawaaf.

Wajibaat in Tawaaf: -

1)   To be free from Hadas-e-Akbar and Hadas-e-Asghar means to be neither in janabat nor without wudhu.

2)   To perform Tawaad by foot walking if three is no share-yee excuse.

3)   To have Satr-e-Aurat (Cover part of body advised by Shara).

4)   To commence Tawaaf in the right (anti-clockwise) direction from Hajar-e-Aswad towards kaabah’s door.

5)   To include Hateem in Tawaaf.

6)   To perform two Rakaats Wajibut-Tawaaf after every Tawaaf (seven rounds).

Mahramaats (forbidden things) in Tawaaf: during Tawaaf the following actions are Haraam(forbidden).

1)   To perform Tawaaf in the state of Janabat. (post-coition bath needed).

2)   To be absolutely naked or to perform namaaz with exposing body parts less than required.

3)   To perform Tawaaf by riding something when there is no excuse.

4)   To pass through Hateem during Tawaaf.

5)   To leave any round or any round’s portion of tawaf.

6)   To commence Tawaaf from any other spot by avoiding Hajar-e-Aswad.

7)   To face chest towards kaabah during Tawaaf, even if some portion of chest is faced; but to stay face to face towards kaabah opposite to Hajar-e-Aswad is permitted.

Violations in Umrah Tawaf and Penalties:

1)   If any wajib item of tawaf is left off, then it can be rectified by fulfilling its penalty; but there is no need for any penalty if Tawaaf is repeated from the beginning.

2)   Damm if Tawaaf was performed either without wadhu or in the state of jinabat.

3)   Damm if even a single round is left off. If complete tawaf or its major part (four rounds) is left off, then no penalty but to repeat it.

4)   While kissing Hajar-e-Aswad, sadaquah if some or perfume is contacted to face or hands; whereas damm if much perfume is contacted.

5)   Umrah becomes null and void if intercourse is committed before Tawaaf. in such cases, damm is a wajib with doing Quaza of Umrah also.

6)   Damm will rectify Umrah But if Intercourse Committed after Tawaaf but before Sa’ee haircut. In such a case Quaza of Umrah is not Necessary.

Drink Zam-Zam Water: - After performing two Rakaat Wajibut-Tawaaf, it is mustahab to drink zam-zam water bellyful by facing towards kaabah. Because Rasool-e-Akram declared that the difference between ourselves and hypocrites is that hypocrites do not consume Zam-Zam water bellyful.

While drinking says the following do’aa.

(ALLAHUMMA INNI AS-ALUKA ILMAN NAAFI AN WA -RIZQUAN WAASI-AN WA-SHIFAA-AN MIN KULLI DAA)

Translation: O Allah! I ask you for beneficial knowledge and abundance in the provision and cure of every ailment.

Try to drink Zam-Zam water in at last three sips with BISMILLAHIR-RAHMANIR-RAHEEM” At the start and ALHAMDUL-LILLAHI-RABBIL-AALAMEEN” at the end of every sip.

Note: After drinking Zam-Zam Water, before going for sa’ee (followed by a tawaf) do Istilaam which is the ninth one, and sunnah. This ninth istilaam is not necessary when tawaf is not followed by sa’ee.

 What is Sa’ee: The word sa’ee means to walk or to run. Here sa’ee means to make seven trips between two rocks (mounts) namely Safa and Marwa. This area is called mas’aa. After mas’aa with the right foot first through babus-safa by uttering drood-e-sharif.

How to perform sa’ee: it is wajib to commence sa’ee from Safa and conclude at Marwa. Climb onto the mount safa and stand facing kaabah. say the niyyah of sa’ee which is sunnah as follows.

(ALLAHUMMA INNI UREEDUS SA’YA BAYNAS-SAFA WAL-MARWATI FA-YASSIRHU LEE WA-TAQUABBALHU MINNI)

Translation: O Allah. I intend to perform sa’ee between Safa and Marwah; therefore, make it easy for and accept it from me.

After the niyyah, raise both hands as if making do’aa and say ALLAHU AKBAR” thrice. Also, SAY LA-ILAHA ILLALLAH MOHAMMADUR RASOOLULLAH and DROOD-E-SHAREEF loudly. Then make Do’aa

Whatever you like is accepted here. now commence the sa’ee from safa towards Marwah at normal space engaging yourself in Do’aa and zikr till you arrive at the area between two green columns illuminated with green florescent light called “MEELAYEN-E-AKHZAHARAYEN” Only the male has to increase their walking speed as slow running between green columns and thereafter to walk at normal space up to the amount of Marwah. While passing between green columns Huzoor Rasool-e-Akram directed the following do’aa.

(RABBIGHFIR WARHAM WA-TAJAWAZ AMMATA’LAMU INNAKA TA’LAMU MA LAM AALAM INNAKA ANTAL A’AZZUL AKRAM)

Translation: My cherisher! Forgive and have mercy and pardon which you know, and indeed you know it which I do not know. Undoubtedly you are the most powerful and most generous.

On reaching Marwah one trip is completed. Know at Marwah and between Marwah and Safa (2nd trip), do exactly the same as was done at Safa and in the first trip. Similarly make seven trips and conclude the seventh trip at, Marwah.

Important note: -

1)   Three is no idh-tibaa from male throughout sa’ee

2)   Females are prohibited to run between green columns.

3)   Better to end sa’ee two Rakaats nafl in the boundary of the Mataaf.

Wajibat in sa’ee: -

1)   To perform Umrah sa’ee in Ehram.

2)   To commence sa ‘ee Safa and terminate it at Marwah.

3)   To walk on foot in sa’ee if there is no excuse.

4)   To cover completely all seven trips of sa’ee in which the first four trips are fardh (obligatory) and the rest of the three trips are wajib.

5)   Sa’ee is to be followed after tawaf.

Violation in sa’ee and penalties:

1)   Damm if performed four or more trips of sa’ee a wheelchair or palanquin etc when there is no excuse. Sadaquah for every trip if the number of trips performed at the wheel chair etc is less than four. However, no penalty if sa’ee is repeated.

2)   Damm if sa’ee is performed before Tawaaf and not repeated after Tawaaf.

Hajamat (Hair cutting of the Head): After completing sa’ee it is wajib for a male to shave the hair of his entire head termed as “Halque” or trim the hair of his one forefinger, termed “Quasr”

The female pilgrims will never shave or trim their heads. Instead, they have to cut with scissors their one-fourth head hair to the length of the first joint of the forefinger.

Note: After hair cut it is mustahab to perform two Rakaats in Masjid-e-Haraam. Now you can remove your Ehraam and take a fresh bath. Males can wear sewn clothes as all the restrictions imposed due to the Ehraam have been lifted since all the formalities of Umrah are Completed May Allah accept it.
