Historic Well of Malik ibn al-Nahhat in Madinah

This well is one of the old wells in the highlands of Madinah. It is made from basalt stones used for the well’s sides and outer wall. The well was dug by Malik ibn al-Nahhat, the grandfather of the companion Saad ibn Khaythama. Saad hosted the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Quba when he came from Makkah before moving to Madinah.

The well got old and damaged over time but was fixed many times, including in 700 AH (1299 CE) and 882 AH (1477 CE). Recently, Prince Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Governor of Madinah, completed the restoration of the well, keeping its old style as an important historic place in Madinah.
