Ain Zubaida is located in Wadi Na'man on the road between Taif and Makkah. It is named after Zubaida bint Ja'far, the wife of Caliph Harun al-Rashid. She ordered the water to be brought from a spring to Makkah in the year 174 AH (791 CE). This was because pilgrims had difficulty getting water from a place called Al-Uwajr, near Jabal Kura.
The project to build the water channels took ten years, and the channels are 38 kilometers long, reaching all the way to Makkah.
Many Muslim leaders, including kings, princes, and wealthy people, helped repair and maintain the spring and wells over time. King Abdulaziz Al Saud also ordered its restoration. A special team called Ain Zubaida Administration was set up to take care of the spring and wells.
